Graham Hancock just released a book where he looks into this very issue. I haven't read it yet but Joe Rogen had him on a few weeks ago to talk about it (hooktube.com).

If you're into ancient history and are not familiar with Graham Hancock, due yourself a favor and check out some earlier Rogan podcasts with him as a guest. The ones with Randall Carlson are especially worthwhile.
