Never forget that pets may lose some sight or hearing as they age and may get spooked by shadows or suddenly noticing someone but not hearing them in the distance walk up next to them.

yeah its sad, there are some breeds of herding dogs that they breed for blue eyes, they are the first to lose sight and hearing, sad really because people are using them as pets and we're losing the working aspect of the dogs. Nothing is better than a herding dog that loves their owner and loves to work
