I'm no scientist, but I understand that there are hundreds of millions of stars in the galaxy. It's also my understanding that there are planets around most of these stars. I would be stupid if I thought the Earth was the only planet in this universe that has life on it. Some of this life is probably much more advanced than we are. Just because our top scientists can't figure out how to travel the vast distance between stars doesn't mean that someone on another planet hasn't. Remember, it wasn't that long ago (historically speaking) when people believed that if one sailed past the horizon that they would fall off the edge and be eaten by monsters. What could civilizations, thousands of years older than ours, have accomplished by now?
One doesn't necessarily exclude the other... You can have real "space aliens" or "inter dimensional entities", call it what you want, friendly or hostile, or both depends, or just not interested at all in contacting us... AND AT THE SAME TIME have a fake alien invasion pulled on us, to control us and/or just to divert more money from tax payers... It can even be real aliens pulling a fake alien stuff to make us believe they don't exist, while they fuck us in the ass...
