Don't habla French, but the symbol he seemed so excited about looked like Roman Catholic type sacred heart symbol, not seriously unexpected in France. Other than that, it is a mystery, but the inscription itself didn't look too 'alien' to a European carving. Be interesting to see how this turns out.
