The actual city of Atlantis has already been found, positively identified, and it is located in North West Africa.
Atlantis was washed away by a massive tidal wave from the Atlantic ocean. The whole region was scraped clean down to the stone upon which it once stood.
However, the civilization related to Atlantis is said by some to have extended across the ocean into both North and South America. North Africa itself is currently a desert, but it used to be a jungle, and there was a much larger population there in the past. Also, the sea levels were much lower during and after the ice age, with most of the water still trapped in the melting glaciers on both polls, and most mountains.
Now we find old cities all over the planet that are currently underwater. Humans prefer to live at the water's edge.
Richat structure (Islamic Republic of Mauritania):
I'm not making any claims about my own opinion on it, but will drop a couple of links to start your own explorations.

these look like great articles! Gonna read them soon.
No prob. It was just a quick look, I wanted to give a couple of differing perspectives.
Yup - that's it.
It would be fascinating to be able to dig way down in the sands of the Middle East and North Africa and find civilizations lost to the ages from the climate change. We know so little about the Sumerians, Elamites, and Akkadians because their civilizations are literally buried in Iraq/Iran/Kuwait right now. I suspect there's entire city-state remnants buried under the sand in Tunisia/Algeria/Morocco/Libya too.
Yup - and I bet they are full of gold too, just like the Aztecs.
Yeah i saw that, its right next to the atlas mountains. Super cool images, Ill try to find them later.
