I'm not really certain, but then I don't think it really makes a difference in my mind at this point.

Though I've scanned multiple religions and their origin stories and parsing out the common themes from them. What I've gotten from it is that at some point the "aliens" became divided over something, probably our fate and/or how to deal with us. The devil/Satan and his followers stood against the larger group of angels and specifically God. The argument/disagreement became so heated that Satan and his followers were cast down to earth both literally and figuratively meaning stripped of their technology and any tools so that apart from their knowledge and biological differences they were on the same level as us primitive humans. While God and his angels booked it only to occasionally return thousands of years later.
