The thing I find hard to believe is the teeny-trails in the sky could have an effect on anything

But is it possible the chemicals are really concentrated and when they are released, they expand a lot or something?

It's water vapor from the atmosphere.
Air goes in the engine, the "humidity" in the air vaporizes in the hot engine, and it goes out the exhaust with the spent fuel gases.
When it hits the cold air (-30°C or colder is common at 35,000 ft.) it condenses to make a cloud.

Start your car on a cold winter day and observe the same effect.

Any secret additive would quickly destroy the engine.
