Watch the second video. The Antarctic Treaty is the only unbroken treaty between most nations on earth and prevents unapproved travel of an entire continent. It costs MILLIONS, and even then they move the goal post. But that's totally normal to ban people from an entire continent, right?

It's an icy wasteland, I'm sure no one would stop you if you wanted to move there and set up camp.
I believe the government lies about as much as they can possibly get away with, after all, nearly everything is a rich man's trick.
But i suspect the drama and laws around the poles are just that, a trick to keep the peasants away from precious resources.
