It's lack of breaking apart and no continuous smoke trail makes me think its just sunlight illuminating the plane's contrails on an otherwise overcast day.

That's what it looks like to me, and the recorders talk about the lack of a smoke trail as well.
*edit: I think you are correct. 4 engine jet with the most port engine has an irregular output. Caught in the light of the sunset.
