NBA especially. There is a whole additional level of of social interaction based around the NFL. People who normally would not care about sports buy into the NFL for that social aspect. I can't do sportsball. I run into people I used to talk baseball with and I have to tell them, yeah I don't follow it anymore. I still enjoy motorsports and sailing regattas.
