I've read that they even falsified publicly available physics information during the cold war. Basically if you used published physics literature as the knowledge base to build an atom bomb, it would not work. I think the west did this in scientific literature, and the east actually did it in their devices. Something about the different guidance systems built into USSR missiles made them appear to be inaccurate when reviewed by western intelligence analysts.
Cold war was super creepy this way. I wish I could remember where I read this so long ago. Maybe Puzzle Palace or something like that.
