At least 57 triathletes who competed at World Cup competitions in Sunderland last weekend have fallen ill after the race. The athletes complained of abdominal pain and nausea a day after the event. Some 2,000 athletes took part in the competition, including a large part of the global top from the sport of triathlon.

Health authorities are still investigating the exact cause, but what is certain is that a persistent bacterium was present in the seawater in the area where the athletes swam in the days before the event. Dat meldt The Guardian.

Water samples that an environmental organization had drawn from the seawater three days before the triathlon competition contained 39 times more E. coli bacteria than the samples taken from the water a month earlier. The E. coli bacterium can cause severe abdominal cramps and, in bad cases, bloody diarrhea.

The British Triathlon Association says that the results of those samples were not published until after the race weekend and that, in addition, the samples came from water in which the triathletes did not swim. Own tests would have met the requirements, says the association.

According to the British newspaper, the swimming part of the triathlon took place in water along the coastline where environmentalists and the government have long been fighting a battle over dumped sewage. A battle fought in multiple British regions.

The Race had to be cancelled." Australian triathlete Jacob Birtwhistle, world number 46, knew enough when he saw the results of the tested samples, posted it on social media and described his physical condition over the past week. "I feel pretty bad since the race, but that's what you get when you swim in the shit. The swim should have been canceled."

Another participant responded: "that explains why I hung my head in the toilet on Monday night."

The triathlon event off the coast of Sunderland was part of the World Triathlon Championship Series, A World Cup circuit consisting of six races that take place across the planet.

In addition to England, there are races in Italy, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Canada and Germany. The best triathletes in the world compete and can secure placement for the Olympics.

Whether Olympic champions and other world leaders got sick is not known. The British Triathlon Association and the UK Health Security Agency are calling on triathlon participants to report themselves so that more clarity is provided about the cause.
