I "ran into" Mike when he was under D'Amato's tutelage. The only thing I remember about him was the width of his shoulders. He had his back to me when I was walking towards him and I distinctly remember thinking goddamn, the width of that guy's shoulders is abnormal.
I had no idea who it was until I passed him and looked back. Even then, he wasn't that well known.
D’Amato gave him structure, a vision for the future and top notch training/knowledge. I always liked Mike Tyson for his honesty, intellect (yeah I know but he was insightful) and boxing talent. The fact that he cared about and cared for carrier pigeons showed he had a spark of humanity which is lacking in a lot of inner city "yufes".
That’s cool that you saw him.
I totally agree with your 3rd paragraph.
It’s nice that he’s doing alright, now.
I felt bad when he went bankrupt. He trusted people, including “money managers”. They stole his $. Tyson can be a nice guy. If someone asked him, he probably would give them $. People didn’t need to steal from him.
