Every thing about the SLS was designed for deep space application. as was ordered by LAW via congressional order. The SLS was made because it is a LAW that it must be made. Deep Space was always the goal given to NASA by congress.
In fact the entire idea that the SLS will be used for moon landings is like using a Carnival Cruise ship to go fishing in a lake. Yes you can do it, but you are just showing off at that point.
