I read as a kid that we launch closer to the equator for reasons. Jules Verne in 1865 chose Tampa, Florida for the launch site of a trip to the moon. A French story about a Florida launch to space?

I think it matters less now than it did, so long as the launch site doesn't interfere with other traffic.

It will always matter from the perspective of efficiency. We could get a rocket into space from the poles if we wanted to, but the payload would be much much less than from the equator.

Agreed, but I don't think they plan on launching traditional heavy rockets. If I remember correctly they use a system that sends smaller payloads.
