Not going to suggest where to go. It will make too many people go there and will make it suck.. Like the place you are currently describing.

Find a small-ish town somewhere where you like the weather and people. Buy as much land as you can (even if you live in town and plan to build later or move) then make your own space.

Make sure it's in one of those states where you can protect yourself, family and property with lethal force for any reason at all.
