It's basically a story of a mobster who uses psychiatry to become a more effective criminal. This show came out in my mid 20s and I didn't watch it through the first time until I was close to 30. But as I rewatch it I am not watching some breakthrough television. I am watching a series about a man who is essentially a parasite who feeds off others and a psychiatrist who wants to treat a mobster.

As I watch Tony Soprano now, I don't see an anti-hero. I see a man with zero morals or values with a show creator trying to create a redemption arc but dies at the end. Everyone else sees the anti-hero who is redeemed but dies at the end. I don't see that at all.

Did I miss the point?

Yes, you did miss the point. Rest assured, sometimes it's better that way.
