That's only assuming the cat is dead when you open the box. In this case it's not curiosity that killed the cat, it's your observation of the cat that does or does not kill it.

Being curious does not kill the cat. You can be curious all day long, but the cat is still both dead and alive until you observe it. You don't have to be curious in order to observe something. And again even if you do open the box because you are curious there is no guarantee you will observe a dead cat.

The proverb "curiosity killed the cat" has nothing to do with cats or death. It's a warning about sticking your nose where it doesn't belong.
