I don’t expect email to be secure unless I’m using PGP, but even having all of your mundane email in the hands of Google, Microsoft, etc. gives them a lot of information about you. Keeping the collected pile of it out of their hands is worth the cost.
You don’t even need to setup your own server. Even a shared mail server run by a small web hosting company beats a typical free mail account for privacy.

I use the domain email I purchase for my web stuff. I wouldn't trust it for really sensitive stuff, but yes - I trust it more than gruegol.
