I have been running my own mail server since 2008. It can be a massive PITA. I am not sure I suggest anyone do it unless you actually want to understand what it takes these days. It's a bitch to get some providers to accept email from you.
Residential cable addresses have no trust. I gave up years ago and just let a host handle my domain mail for $30 a year.
VPS + Proxy/VPN. I used to have a business connection at home with a few statics in good standing but I moved and it costs too much now to get the same thing. It is actually cheaper for me to host the VPS as my main "endpoint" then do forwarding/proxying with rewrite rules and such.
It is not for people that don't understand that or don't want to maintain it.
Yeah, that's not something I want to mess with for email, and it's beyond most people's ability.
Everything is weaponized against us these days.
