There is no "homelab" sub and some people use ESXi for business without paying for it... There is no replacement being offered by vmWare either.

Im using ProxMox and have been for a few years now. You can pay for it if you want but don't have to. It works well enough as a replacement.

Not surprising. Oracle did the same shit. Anything free or helped anyone got cut almost on day 1. Vmware and Sun both had this "ok, you can download and use it but don't make money with it (or at least don't let us find out about it) and no support" but were very forgiving when you showed up when you turned a profit and said "hey...we got our act together, we need support". Those products are being killed off as fast as they can kill them.
