Gnu Social is the granddaddy of self-hosted twitterlikes, the great-granddaddy being Identi.ca, which GS grew out of.
While Gnu Social has fallen by the wayside these days, it's still a useful thing if you want to run a private little group for family or friends. It doesn't really federate well with Pleroma or Mastodon (which isn't suggested due to it's built-in philosophy of blocking things it doesn't like,) it's easy to install on a standard LAMP stack and runs well on a Pi or other low power machine.
I run several instances, one collects outputs from various machines, one runs on TOR and is a private gathering place, one is a bookmark collector. The usefulness of this system is endless.
