Why am I not surprised. I try not to think about this but it is depressing. So much potential in all the tech we have and it’s being squandered by paranoid government officials and corrupt business men.

I'm not sure that it'd be possible to make it truly anonymous and have it actually still work. But, yes... What's depressing is that they're taking advantage of this and there are no current privacy laws that make selling this data illegal. They don't even need a warrant to get it. They need a warrant to force a telco to hand the data over - but the telco can give the data over freely or just charge for it.

It's not illegal, unfortunately. The two best options to fight it are going to (probably) come from the ACLU and the EFF.

You are probably right. Honestly I do wonder if human nature just prevents this type of thing from not happening in big business. Its like when people get enough money they just can't help themselves. Sad.
