Miller, who works at Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA), told the outlet that two doctors refused to perform the organ retrieval after realizing that the donor had wrongly been declared dead. ... In the operating room, Miller recalled the case coordinator phoning her supervisor at KODA for help once they saw signs of life. The supervisor insisted that the case coordinator needed to “find another doctor to do it,” Miller recalled.

Ultimately, the organ retrieval was canceled. Hoover now lives with Rhorer, his legal guardian.

Hoover is safe, but the shocking moment stuck with KODA workers, some of whom quit after that incident. ...

Earlier that day, the donor had undergone cardiac catheterization, which is used to evaluatethe heart’s health before or after a transplant.

“The donor had woken up during his procedure that morning for a cardiac catheterization. And he was thrashing around on the table,” Martin said. But then, doctors sedated the patient and continued to plan to recover his organs, she added.

“That’s everybody’s worst nightmare, right? Being alive during surgery and knowing that someone is going to cut you open and take your body parts out?” Martin told NPR. “That’s horrifying.

Just in case any of you fellas have been living under a stone, never eve...not ever not never...sign an organ donor card. Organs are not harvested from the dead, they are plucked from the mostly dead (((i.e. "brain dead"))) which means you're still slightly alive.

"All dead? Well, there's only one thing you can do. Go through his pockets and look for loose change."

-Miracle Max Princess Bride 1987 (Quite possibly one of the most Jewowitz of lines in one of the most archetypal Jewenstein portrayals on celluloid)

Very important notice.

If you walk in (or are wheeled in) and you have an organ donor card. You are a goat into satanic cult den.

You can sue for malpractice and the profit of organs would still make it worth.

Yeah, I've let my mom and boyfriend know I will never be an organ donor and not to give up on me if they say I'm braindead. Those fuckers lie about everything and anything to get money and I know I'm more valuable to them dead than alive.

Brain death means death of the entire brain and brain stem. The problem is where they believe the brain is irreparably damaged after four minutes of anoxia, they're equivocating on when death actually does occur.

TV and movies are not reliable sources of medical legal definitions.

Just so you are aware, many states have "preconsent" and "presumed" consent laws for organ donation. You must OPT OUT of your state's organ donor registry.

You want to donate? Just remember hospitals and other organizations are making millions of dollars on organs and tissues. And your family gets nothing but an atta boy. For sale at time of death or nothing.

The potential 'donor' is safe now but article said his sister is his legal guardian, so how messed up did he get from the doctors' malpractice and treating him as if he were already dead?

In the article it says it was an overdose that put him in there in the first place. So who knows what caused which?

There you have it. Holy fng hell they didn't do a tox screen to see what his drug levels were. Holy fng moly.

That's some scary shit.

Those doctors would be coughing up their own organs.

I'd settle to see them lose their jobs and get some time in jail.

This is so fucked up on so many levels it's not funny. Either this guy was full of sedation or he was cold or the organ procurement agency didn't do their f*ng job ensuring this guy would expire after removing life support.

Lawsuit city. This guy was not dead. Brain dead organ donors do not thrash around. This guy was not dead and they fucked up big time.
