The pictures are amazing themselves, but then they developed chemical/mechanical way to take and produce such photos is great cleverness and luck that it was possible. I always thought that diffraction-based material colors were limited to pastels, since you tend to just knock out wavelengths due to two reflections mixing (phase cancellation). That they can do the opposite and just reflect one wavelength is impressive.
