We already mock ancient china for using mercury as a "birth control" to intentionally cause miscarriage.

Also, the phrase "Mad as a hatter" was because hatters used mercury to work the materials, often with their bare hands leading it to be absorbed into their skin and slowly ruining their brain making them "go mad".

And all that knowledge doesn't protect us from having that crap put directly into our bloodstream, only because some guys in white coats said "don't worry about it".

We've come a long way for sure.
