You know what really gets my noggin joggin' about this news story? Cloning...

You don't hear about cloning in the news that much anymore. It was a huge story, maybe 25 years ago, when they first cloned Dolly the sheep. A crazy achievement for mankind, that looked like it was about to start a debate about human cloning and the ethics of human genetic engineering in general.

And then you just stopped hearing about it completely. Nobody ever talked about it again.

And now we get this news story, that apparently, with the current technology, it is pretty easy for some random rancher to clone sheep just for sport.

But we still don't hear anything about human cloning, or human genetic manipulation.

And back when they cloned Dolly, everyone in the media made sure to include the caveat:

A sheep is not a human, and science is still a long way off from cloning humans

But let's be real, they obviously aren't, and the fact that it isn't talked about it at all makes me think they probably are. There is no way you could convince me that the Chinese aren't cloning/generically engineering humans right now, and if they're doing it, the US is probably doing it as well.

Just seems suspicious, how little I've heard about cloning over the past 25 years.

Dang you're right. The last big thing was stem cell research under Bush

Ill have to look for the article but I remember reading something about a trial where someone was actually cloned in the EU but the identity was being kept secret so they would have privacy and it wouldn't ruin the study..

I have no doubt that there are "clones" walking around today. They may not even know it themselves.

Wow. This is a rabbit-hole I should not be going down during work hours...

[–] 3 pts

Yeah.. No wonder no one is talking about it anymore... Ever see the movie "The Island"? It could be closer to truth than fiction.

Also, that article says at least 2 were cloned, one in the US one in the EU.

I suspect they've sus'd out cloning well enough it's not an issue anymore. Now it's crispr technology, cutting & pasting gene sequences to prolong the lives of the wealthy.

They are protected internationally by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, domestically by the U.S. Endangered Species Act and are prohibited in the State of Montana to protect native sheep from disease and hybridization.

“In pursuit of this scheme, Schubarth violated international law and the Lacey Act, both of which protect the viability and health of native populations of animals.

“The kind of crime we uncovered here could threaten the integrity of our wildlife species in Montana,”

The Act is one of the most powerful tools the United States has to combat wildlife trafficking and prevent ecological invasion by injurious wildlife.

If only animal rights extended to humans...

This is a weird fuckin story

Dudes 80 years old. Just let him be

No man. The thing about this is the "canned hunt" aspect. They take animals and literally put them in a cage or tie them to a tree so rich asshole can shoot them like they're "hunting". that's not hunting. That's animal cruelty. Zoos sell their aging animals to these canned hunt places. Fuck these people.

I'm against hunting in general, however, I realize hunting is a necessity for certain people and certain types of animals. But this isn't hunting.

[–] 1 pt

Yeah, that's not hunting. Still be cool to hunt giant mutant horned sheep . Why are you against hunting?

[–] 0 pt

I don't know, if it's for survival it's a necessity. If herds have to be culled, well, do it humanely. I hate cooking and eating animals period. I hate seeing animals suffer. Period. Life is hard enough for animals out in the wild much less some fat bastard human putting them in a pen and shooting them because it's "fun".

[–] 0 pt

That is not how managed hunts happen.

[–] 0 pt

"Managed hunt" refers to hunts to control populations which include fencing them and even luring them with food.

"Canned hunt" is much the same.

It's about money and "muh gun dick".

I absolutely hate these shitheads with exotic game ranches. I've seen exotics running down a county road. They don't belong here. The only way I would be in support of it is if they are working specifically with some sort of group to try to prevent extinction of a species.

[–] 0 pt

Then monopolies like Monsanto will control and corrupt it

So theyre ready to throw this guy in prison for years for importing a sheep that was already killed?

But still no Little St. James arrests, huh?

[–] 0 pt

I'd be looking for clones of himself.

[–] 0 pt

So they smuggled semen, I'm assuming. They just called it 'parts'. Invitro'd his sheep, bred a 'clone' then used that to create a new species.

He sent off genetic material to a lab to have embryos cloned - 165 in total - and then artificially inseminated his sheep with the embryos.
