Ears evolved because sound is so valuable in omnidirectionally detecting important things in the environment.

The original evolutionary reason doesn't have to exist for the evolved characteristic to still be useful. Spoken word, for example. Sound tells of all sorts of useful things in all directions, through walls, etc.
