There were other inventors doing a lot of the same thing. The late 1800s was a time when there were lots of people messing around with all the newfound technologies. Anything you dream of inventing now was invented at least 100 years ago and most of it was found to be lacking in some or many ways so what we have now is the best of the bunch.
