Not as crazy as project orion. A ground launched version of this was in Footfall (en.wikipedia.org) by Larry Nivin and Jerry Pournelle.

Book spoiler:

Essentially a thick ass metal plate with an aircraft carrier sized installation and a bunch of battle shuttles bolted to the top launched into orbit by exploding a succession of nukes under the plate.

Bwahahahaha wtf!

Seriously. Here's (youtube.com) a video of them testing the theory with conventional explosives.

From Hackaday (hackaday.com).

The flip side of that is whatever you use to speed up, you also have to use to slow down.

Using immense volumes of salt water with uranium in it to get going means having an equal amount stored until reaching the destination.

The volumes needed are massive - almost impractical.

What happens if too much is used to get going? there is no way to stop. ever.

Could this be used to power a gigantic crematorium?
