I'd think knots woukd be a problem. Prolly want a hardwood so a thin piece would be strong, but maybe balsa IDK. Seems would need to be samded to be real smooth and maybe sanded after the epoxy.

Would probably have to be a hard wood like maple so the epoxy wouldn't be the only contributing factor to the strength of the material. You hear about cool technological breakthroughs like this all the time in different fields, and then the discovery is buried by the elites that would lose money by it's commercial implementation. I hope that doesn't happen in this case.

Seems like it could be DIY.

Yeah, it looks totally DIY. It would have been nice if they had included information on the type of epoxy they used, and how much, and how many layers of it is necessary. And also the exact thickness of the wood they used. But I guess through experimentation all of that could be worked out.
