Scientists have long had a problem understanding the difference between what they can do, and what they should do....maybe because there never seems to be any real consequences for their negative actions and bad choices.

If you fully understood what they CAN do, you can rest easy because it really isn't much. They are much better are pretending to be doing something amazing than they are in actual practice. This is precisely why you always hear of them accomplishing some tremendous feat, but you never seem to witness these 'amazing feats.'
