Having worked in chemistry for decades it is nice to understand the complete mechanics of polymer formation. However, it is completely unnecessary, as long as the production process is fully detailed and followed. Production of polymers, coatings, adhesives and pharmaceuticals, is a bulk process where the measured end results are actully the average of the entire batch. Polymers produced today yield a fairly tight bell curve of molecular weights. Only pharmaceutical polymers, such as polyethylene glycol 3350, Miralax, is extremely tightly controlled due to very low molecular weight fractions of PEG having an adverse effect on health due to its similarity to anti-freeze, which is mono-molecular ethylene glycol.
