Alcubierre already mathed out an FTL drive, the only problem is that it required the energy output of the planet Jupiter to work. Some later scientists looked at and refined the idea, and got the energy requirements down to the RTG on the Voyager probes.
The problem now, is that it requires materials that don't exist (as far as we know).

It's been shown over and over again that our mathematical understanding of the universe is quite poor and is in most cases "Good enough". So, just because he was able to math it out, doesn't mean that it can happen.
