Whelan (dishonorably discharged marine) and Gershkovich where caught doing shit they shouldn't had been. Especially Whelan, whom Russia had dead to rights on industrial espionage. Drudge has a WSJ (aka terrorist news and world report) article linked but it's just western propaganda.

Note the shit eating grin looks on every picture on Gershkovich, like HE somehow got himself out of jail.

The "opposition leaders" released were most likely WEF scum and people of no real value. As for the others we'll have to see who they are before passing judgment.
