They excel in being way lighter than a standard piston engine while being able to produce decent hp. It's more of a weight consideration on choosing a rotary engine over a piston. It's not like the same rotary in my Rx-8, this is teeny generator sized and just to recharge the battery while normal rotaries are also tiny compared to piston car and generator engines. Long winded and i'm stoned as hell sorry.

Gotcha, so an ultra compact gas engine for recharging. Now that makes sense.

Yeah lithium etc car batteries are heavy as hell. US safety standards also make production vehicles way overweight w/ safety shit etc. I'm a libertarian in that sense. If i can ride a motorcycle w/ others and no airbags then I should be able to buy a new vehicle w/o them standard and save money.

Tying fuel efficiency standards to wheel base is even worse. As a consumer, I have at least some interest in not dying in a crash and conceivably am willing to pay for safety features. However, if I want a metaphorical V8 on a go-cart (easy terms, no money down), big daddy government wont allow it because it cant meet fuel efficacy standards for that wheelbase. But if I buy a larger, heavier vehicle...that's fine because the ginormous wheelbase meets lesser fuel efficacy standards.
