Yeah lithium etc car batteries are heavy as hell. US safety standards also make production vehicles way overweight w/ safety shit etc. I'm a libertarian in that sense. If i can ride a motorcycle w/ others and no airbags then I should be able to buy a new vehicle w/o them standard and save money.

Tying fuel efficiency standards to wheel base is even worse. As a consumer, I have at least some interest in not dying in a crash and conceivably am willing to pay for safety features. However, if I want a metaphorical V8 on a go-cart (easy terms, no money down), big daddy government wont allow it because it cant meet fuel efficacy standards for that wheelbase. But if I buy a larger, heavier vehicle...that's fine because the ginormous wheelbase meets lesser fuel efficacy standards.
