People in ancient times usually conducted their wars in the summer, so it would've been hot, especially with all the physical exertion of a battle. They wouldn't want to have worn full-length clothing most of the time and certainly not a suit of heavy armor that would slow them down and restrict their movements, as well as amplifying the heat.
