"Plus, I like the idea of them being unhappy." Haha. Fresh out of high school I was put in charge of honey extraction in family business. First guys I hired were useless and I was asked to fire them. More guys and I had to fire them also. Then, not having anyone and falling behind I got desperate. I hired a couple early teen girls who were easily bossed around at least teachable and showed up for work on time since I had to pick them up and take them home. Production was great and I caught up by the first week. I'd prep the operation at six am, pick up the girls so we could start production at 8am and have them home at six pm. It was great and I was breaking all previous production levels. Then the second Friday they both confronted me about how hard I was pushing them with no breaks, etc. Tears in their eyes as they told me they were going to quit. Oh shit! They were serious and had planned this. Everything I had been trying to accomplish would be in jeopardy. My family was out of town visiting friends and I couldn't run to them for help. Instantly an idea popped in my head. Girls are simple creatures with easy solutions. I promised them I would be easier on them (lie), give them fifteen minute breaks (knowing I could just cut breaks short and they have no time sense) and take them out for pizza on Saturday as we all had that day off. (they did get a ride in my grandparents luxury car to stuff themselves with pizza and soda). Next week they were pleased about their pizza outing and the twice a day rest breaks with half hour lunch breaks. I got them to work even better and kind of talked nicer to them. Production was even better and I requested they both get a dollar an hour raise. Haha. Girls are easy to control but I would never mix sexes in such a small crew. I even banished my brother from the shop the follow season for being disruptive. Production is everything.
