The US soldier has always been used for bad purposes.
And that even includes world war 2.
relatives who were frontlines ww2 vets. It wasn't universally agreed it was a good cause. In fact Roosevelt had PROMISED he would keep us out but lied. People didn't want to go. They still remembered the senseless horrors of ww1 trenches and machine gun slaughters.
They joined up though because they knew there was going to be a draft and they wanted to choose the branch of service they got before being drafted for the army
