Everything I've seen about modern Japan revolves around odd "salaryman" behaviors like staying until the boss leaves. So there will be an office full of dudes sitting around for three hours with nothing to do just so when the boss leaves they can all shoot up and yell "Goodnight Chairman!!!".

Some of the blame for the aging population/suicide rates/dropping birth rates falls into it too, long hours are the norm.

There might be a high suicide rate because of the work pressure, but at least they know how to get things done - I'm surrounded by mongs at my workplace and not one suicide yet, despite being objectively useless to the company.

I think the salarymen go out on the lash with their workmates all the time so they probably need that to unwind. The streets are littered with salarymen pass-out drunk at night time and the culture is to not bother them and let them sleep where they fall.

I've had jobs that drove me to drinking. If you're getting wasted on weeknights there is something wrong that needs to change.

The only time you can be honest in Japan is if you are drunk. They drink heavily (proportionally to their body size) because it’s the only way you ever get to decompress emotionally.

That country has the highest rate of sexless marriages in the world. Kids can go days without seeing their parents. Tokyo and the other major cities are meat-grinders for the soul.
