You can download the game here: https://www.myabandonware.com/game/mechwarrior-4-mercenaries-3ak (might take some time) This version is entirely free as the owners of it released it as free in 2009, originally released in 2002 it is almost 20 years old now and that means it is older than some zoomers who voted. While the base Mechwarrior4 Vengeance came out in 2000.

I have tested the "MekTek version 1.8 GB" It is pre-patched and includes bonus content and community fixes. It worked on my modern machine but you might need to do some fiddling and compatibility (there are several resources online for this). All that said the original base game and small DLC content is available same site for that vanilla experience. I highly recommend the training and spending a lot of time in the keybindings and settings so you can pilot your way comfortably.

I will always have a soft spot for this game and it still holds up after all these years IMO if you are the type that can enjoy older games. As for anything else you can let your own eyes and ears sell you on it.

I'm getting it. I think I have it (paid) from back then. I had ONE mech warrior game that was pretty fun for casual gamers.

While under the tag of "Simulator" it is pretty forgiving for casual play, and has some "freeplay" modes right in the main menu. The roughest part of getting into it is learning the controls and changing them to be more comfortable.

It's not the game though. appears to be an expansion or patch type for file.

I am guessing you downloaded the MekTek pack and see a folder named 'base' and a UDT file after extracting? look inside the 'base' folder that is like how it would have installed into a location back in the day.

There will be an .exe named 'MW4Mercs" that is the game launcher, might need to run as admin or in compatibility mode.

If you get issues in game with fonts or menus you might need to do this extra step in properties, compatibility settings. Change high DPI settings button, check High DPI scaling override, drop down menu Scaling performed by "Application"

Let me know if you got it working.

Wow its abandoneware now.

It looks so beautiful. I'll have to check it out.

It is very much worth it if it caught your eye, there is plenty to play with to get you feet wet with the "Instant Action" without committing to a long campaign or resource management.

Nice. Yeah I LOVED MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries.

Looking forward to this one.

Been addicted to mechs ever since MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries all those years ago as a tiny lad. Real fucking shame what has happened to the IP and future of the worlds they built.
