The attention to detail always blows me away.

Video description:

In this video I'm fully restoring the complete rear axle, except the differential. I took the full assembly off the car in the teardown in episode 1. At first it looked like a quick and easy job, but after seeing all the parts after disassembly I knew this might take a little longer. I decided to go with a classic finish and paint them all in matt black. Almost all parts made of steel have been yellow zinc plated by a local company. This is a very good rust protection. On top of that Mister Patina powder coated the parts, this is a double protection and these parts should never ever rust again. I'm also installing adjustable coilovers by KW in the rear. These came with the classic KW colors yellow and purple. This color scheme looks really cool, but it doesn't fit so well with the classic car. Luckily they also offer these parts in black with their so called „Classic Line“. The rear sway bar was an aftermarket one. Its links were put together by a bunch of pieces. I decided to remake them in the same style as the original ones in the front. Doing that I was able to reuse the jig I made for the front axle for bending the special washers and also making the nylon lock nuts. The drums from the brake looked really bad at first. A broken fin and damage on almost all edges. With a bit of TIG welding from my friend material was quickly added back and brought back to shape with some hand files. New brake shoes, brake cylinder and new springs and the rear brake is in perfect condition again. You may ask why I haven't done a disc conversion. Simply because the original brakes are quite good if adjusted well and since I'm keeping the engine pretty much stock, better brakes are not really needed. I also really like the look of the drum brakes. The half-shafts were a little project on their own. The two sliding pieces were not zinc plated, because the plating would change the tolerances of the inside and may cause problems. In this video I restored everything except the differential. This and the complete reassembly of the rear axle back to the car will come in episode 8 next week.

I guess I can’t figure out why he mills nuts and bolts when these are parts you can simply buy. I get most of it and perfection, but making a Nyla-lock nut is a waster of time.

Outside of that he did all rubber bushings on the front, da fuk? Poly will make it ride like it’s on rails. He did at least poly endlinks in the back, but come on

I find it interesting, maybe some of these bolts are weird sizes that are quickly made from hex stock, then plated how he wishes. I also had no idea you could make a nyloc nut like that. Fascinating.

This guy seems to have lots of time on his hands, what with straightening, deburring, filing and sanding every small imperfection to make the part better than factory.

Wouldn't be for me but hey, to each their own.

The PU bushings, hmm IDK. I've worked with some quite soft durometer PU, Shore A 60 might be what he uses? Just as soft and more durable than vulcanized rubber. I've use PU springs for stamping tools and the like as my raw material. Looks similar to what he's got there.

For suspension components in always do poly for more stiffness. It tightens up everything and makes a sports care “tighter” but you compromise the vibration transfer. But in a 240z there was almost No damping n sound anyway. So it’s not like you change much. But the firm response is much better.

I put ploy on everything 4x4 and even classics that I have, because I want it to drive and respond with acuteness if that’s a word.

Also I haven’t looked but I would bet a weeks work, that everything he has made is readily available in the 240/60/80 rebuild market. And his time isn’t free. And a bolt or nut is cheaper than his time.

But if he’s making 200-300k off a video, then maybe it’s part of the fun.
