Turns out what I thought was a popcorned chip was only a sharpie mark on the label. My photo wasn't very good, I guess.

I bought a used printer from someone, which had a paper feed problem and exchanged main boards. The original fault was indeed gone but now my printer had the feed problem. I had assumed it was only a mechanical issue on the used one. Damn.

I switched the main boards again, hoping to keep using my original one with the annoying but manageable fault. Was sorely diappointed, when the paper feed problem now also occurred on my machine. Double damn.

Ended up biting the bullet and buying a new printer. It's a Brother MFC-3760CDW and I'm happy with it so far. It's connected through WiFi and Linux detected both printer and scanner no problem at all, no special drivers needed.

Brother's are the only way to go. I have had my MFC for over a decade and it's still working just fine.

If you get "lines" when scanning from the top tray (not the bed), make sure to clean the glass (bed and the part next to the plastic line). It will probably fix it. It's usually just some dust on that little piece of glass the paper passes over when you do a scan from the top feed.

Used printers are rarely worth the time and effort to repair and use.

Yeah, the only time it is really is when its a very expensive "professional" level printer that only needs a few cheap parts.

I had a really nice CMKY printer than only had done a few thousand pages and the only thing it needed was a new thermal fuse. It was worth the $50 for the printer and $10-ish for a new fuse and my annoyance to repair it.

That thing finally died years ago and I didn't bother to try to repair it since I was not printing stuff that needed color anymore so I just went with a basic brother MFC laser.

Yeah, only wanted to steal the main PCB to fix my own, low mileage one. Still had a set of fresh toner carts too. Best laid plans and such.
