Ever wonder why we, being a Christian nation, did not teach Hebrew or Greek in grade schools? But that is a topic for another time.
In my opinion, choose the NIV (New international version) before copywrite 1970. Thrift stores and yard sales have them in abundance. I use many versions for they all contribute in some areas of scripture. Remember the Bible is the inspired Word of God. He will speak to you through the Holy Spirit.
You may read the same verses many times before something special is revealed to you. And when you "see" a word from God it is very exciting.
However, let's see how I can explain it............ the Bible has not been corrupted as many think, but it has been truncated. Reduced down so it will fit. Over time, this is the way it has remained until 1970. I avoid newer than 1970 because that is when modern language changes were tried and it begins to dilute the meaning even further. Ever see these huge big thick Bibles? They have been less truncated. This is a bad example, but it's like when a movie is cut down to fit in a time slot. Publishers are always trying to fit the book into a smaller and smaller space.
So let us look at the meaning of a particular verse, For example: Genesis 3:16 My wife had a huge problem with this verse, so I begin looking into the original text to see if I could help. The original text is Paleo Hebrew, not modern Hebrew. I learned the alphabet and some of the original texts are online in many places.
The scripture is what God said to Eve after she and Adam were caught disobeying his command to not eat of the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden.
My NIV says: To the woman he said: "I will greatly increase your pain in childbearing; with pains you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.
After much studying Paleo Hebrew and realizing that English is very lacking to capture the complete tapestry of what God was saying to Eve, (what God said is filled with an emotional connection to a woman filled with regret, she KNOWS what she has done is massive, has consequences and is irreversible for she has gained wisdom), and this lame attempt from the Paleo Hebrew is what it means to me.
God Said to Eve: "A Snare (by Satan) has increased your sorrow and your sadness and your sighing. In sorrow (crying, regret, fear and pain) you shall bring forth sons. Your desire will no longer be to love me (share my company, my provisions, my garden, my protection, my happiness), but you will eventually turn away from me and cling to your husband (for his company, his love, his provisions) and he will protect you."
Big difference huh?
So when you study, remember that the texts are much more complicated and richer than you can EVER imagine. Since the beginning of time Satan has been trying to undermine and corrupt everything good, especially through words and meanings. Learn God's commands, learn Jesus' commands, learn the Spirit's commands and obey them.
