I worked as a shovel hand and then Q.A in a paving crew for years. We ate before the mix arrived and worked through till finish. When the trucks start coming there was normally no let up. Couldn't imagine putting anything in the hopper for long enough to cook it. If the hopper had mix in it we were paving, if there was a hold up with the mix we ran the hopper through and the paver sat on the joint till the next truck arrived.
Before that I worked as a mixer man/pot man in a roofing crew using mastic asphalt. We could do that sort of thing if we were working from a pot doing details, but we never did, too messy. We'd just go to the local for a pie.
Yeah, my experience was different.
We only did Urban/suburban streets, car parks and such. From patching to hundreds of tonne. I heard people speak of cooking in the mix like that but never saw anyone do it.
I wouldn't, too fumy.
