When all of this was built, there weren't terrorists in the country. Our "leaders" hadn't come from Klaus Schwab yet, we hadn't imported a bunch of illegal aliens yet. There wasn't a compelling reason to harden the infrastructure. Today, it's a much different story. Our so called government is now our enemy. We have mercenary armys implanted right in our society. There is no possible way to protect it. The only thing we can do is disconnect from it using our own independent systems.
I love Maui, it's beautiful but now it's deadly. Its isolation and inability to escape makes it a target of control. If you live there, you need a boat, it's your only lifeline. Imagine what the Hawaiian government can do now. They can prevent all goods and food from being imported. They can starve the entire population out in months. Sure, there are farms that can possibly feed about 1% of the population. But that's it.
