In theory, he would have a decent civil rights violation case as his statement was clearly not a true threat, his arrest is a clear violation of his 1st amendment rights. However, given the current state of the justice system, he's probably fucked.

He probably did. That's generally a bad idea, there is nothing that you can say to the police that will help you. If they decide you are guilty, then there is no changing their minds. Invoke your 5th amendment rights and get a good lawyer.
