If you look at my paycheck, taxes are more than my mortgage. I'm literally buying the government a better house than I can afford for myself with what's left.
The government is literally forcing me at gunpoint to buy them a house bigger than my own. If the public viewed taxes in this light they would revolt.

Don't forget about property tax, sales tax, gas tax, food tax, utility taxes, gift tax, inheritance tax etc. The rate is significantly higher than what you see on your pay stub.
