So i'm camped on a county road right now in a pretty scenic area. i walked up the road and i found a little expired polyp of the san juan river, it looks just like horseshoe bend minus the red rock and minus the water. i thought about moving camp up there for the next two nights but this time of year there's a lot of mice and kangaroo rats and pack rats looking to cause havoc because they're trying to find nests and store food and whatnot. and just from previous experiences i know cliffside areas are notoriously bad for these kind of animals. so i just kind of walked around and looked. i'm going to take a jog up there tomorrow and run the whole one side of the rim, that should be a fun run for an hour. but anyway so i'm walking down the hill back to my rig and i see this really awkwardly out of place sprinter van coming up the hill. mind you this is the fourth vehicle i've seen here since i pulled in two days ago so it's kind of out of place. and over the past couple of days i've had a lot of social encounters with people so not really thinking i tried to wave the guy down, he pulled over and he leaned over to his wife and she went into the back and pulled out a small case. and i'm thinking oh wow she just got a gun case. so out of stupid curiosity i still kind of walk up to the guy and i give him a wide berth. i figure the further away from him i am the less likely he is to shoot me at least accurately. so we got to chat and whatever and i said hey are you looking for a view or something and he goes well no i'm looking for xyz formation. i told him that's really not here, that's about 20 miles down on the highway. but right up the hill is this really beautiful overlook that kind of looks like horseshoe bend if you want to check that out, you can even camp there. he was thankful and we said our goodbyes. i get to my rig i look in the mirror and i look at myself and how i presented myself to this man. i've got long crazy sun bleached hair, my clothes are stained, i don't match, and i'm patchy gray bearded and weather beaten. look like a real catch for the ladies. i just felt like no wonder why this guy got ready for war, i look like i'm a crazed redneck. kind of a shit post and i do clean up well. i just didn't think i'd have to put on my city gear way the heck out where i was.

Well that's cool man, yeah you do meet some of the most interesting fellas if you have an open heart. Some encounters aren't always great but most are. They made a wrong turn down the road is what it seems and I think where I told him to go they got a little nervous that I'd pay a night time visit. And to be honest I'm sitting at my camp a mile away with a fire going, looking at the shimmering lights coming from Navajo country. Couldn't ask for more perfect evening.
